Nick Petrangelo Wins 2022 PokerGO Cup Event #5 for $369,000

Nick Petrangelo’s run of success on the PokerGO Tour (PGT) continued on Monday with a victory in Event #5: $25,000 No-Limit Hold’em from the 2022 PokerGO Cup. Petrangelo topped the 41-entry field to win $369,000 in prize money.

Petrangelo had a tremendous Stairway To Millions series in January, cashing four times for more than $1,800,000 combined including two wins. He’s now the first player to earn more than 1,000 points on the 2022 PGT leaderboard. Petrangelo came into Event #5 of the PokerGO Cup with 845 PGT leaderboard points. He added 221 with Monday’s victory to push his total to 1,066.

“Everything has been going really well since even, like, September,” Petrangelo said. “A little up and down, but yeah, since then pretty much everything has been working out. I’m running great, winning all-ins, and getting hands at the right times. Sometimes you get around the bubble when you have a lot of chips and you lose a couple of hands, but it’s been the opposite for me when I go deep and everything just goes well.”

Since September 2021, Petrangelo has won nearly $5,600,000 in live tournaments. He has two scores of more than $1,000,000, five wins, and has reached heads-up play nine times.

“Sometimes when everything is going all in your favor you think every hero call is going to be right, every big bluff is going to get through, and you can get a little out of hand – a little bit of ‘winner’s bias,’ I guess,” Petrangelo said. “It’s important to stay focused and just try to play well.”

After Monday’s win inside the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas, many of the players competing on Day 1 of Event #6: $25,000 No-Limit Hold’em took time to congratulate Petrangelo on the win. According to Petrangelo, it’s the respect of his peers, the ones competing day in and day out in high-stakes PGT events, that means the most.

“It’s great,” Petrangelo said. “I’ve always said the biggest metric for us is how the community perceives you, not necessarily your results. We have a great community here with all the guys that play these things all the time. It’s awesome, it’s like a home game. We all like each other. It’s kind of like being co-workers at this point. No one wishes anyone bad luck. Everyone is rooting for everybody. Certain guys go on heaters, and you’re just the guy at that point.”

There were 41 entries in Event #5: $25,000 NL Hold’em from the 2022 PokerGO Cup, generating a prize pool of $1,025,000. The top six players finished in the money.

How Petrangelo Won Event #5

After registration closed and the field worked its way down to the final table of nine, Petrangelo had one of the healthier stacks remaining and was competing for the chip lead. Entering the nine-handed final table, he was second in chips behind Ali Imsirovic, but not by much.

Petrangelo picked up some chips from Bill Klein with nine players remaining and pushed his stack to more than 1,000,000 in chips. He then watched as Imsirovic knocked out Sergi Reixach in ninth place.

With eight players remaining, Darren Elias found a double through Petrangelo, but Petrangelo did have the best of it going in. Petrangelo had ace-eight against Elias’ ace-three, and Elias rivered a three. That hand knocked Petrangelo below 1,000,000 in chips, but he quickly got back to work and picked off a bluff from Sean Winter to move back up the leaderboard.

Petrangelo had the chip lead for a little while before Klein took the top spot. Then, Jeremy Ausmus was knocked out by Imsirovic in eighth place to put the tournament on the money bubble. That’s when Justin Saliba fell in seventh, going out when he ran pocket sevens into the pocket kings of Winter.

With Day 1 completed, Petrangelo was in fourth chip position with an even 1,000,000 in his stack.

During Monday’s finale, Elias was the first player to bust. He went out in sixth place to Nick Schulman. Schulman then eliminated Imsirovic in fifth place.

Next to go was Winter, and he busted to Petrangelo. Petrangelo had king-queen against Winter’s queen-ten and held.

Petrangelo was faced with three-handed play against Klein and Schulman, and it was his opponents who would get into it to set up heads-up play. Schulman was all in with ace-seven against Klein’s pocket eights. Schulman flopped a pair of aces and turned two pair with a seven hitting the felt, but an eight on the river delivered the knockout blow.

Heads-up play began with Klein out in front, his 3,775,000 to Petrangelo’s 2,375,000. Klein stretched his lead out to start and then things started to go back and forth a little. All the while, Klein held onto his lead, but then Petrangelo made a straight against Klein’s top pair and won a big pot to get the stacks just about even.

The two kept battling back and forth, and Petrangelo began to slowly work out a lead of his own. Then, in the 50,000-100,000 level with a 100,000 big blind ante, the final hand came up. Klein limped in from the button with queen-jack of diamonds and Petrangelo moved all in from the big blind with ace-nine. Klein called all in for 2,875,000 and was the player at risk. No help came for Klein and he was eliminated in second place, with Petrangelo coming out on top for $369,000.

The 2022 PokerGO Cup series is now through five tournaments, with three more to go. With the win in Event #5, Petrangelo moved to sixth on the series leaderboard with 221 points. Klein improved to 246 points and is now fourth on the leaderboard. Jeremy Ausmus and his 407 points remain out in front in the race for the $50,000 championship bonus.

On the 2022 PGT leaderboard, Nick Petrangelo remains in the lead, only now with even more points. He came into Event #5 at the 2022 PokerGO Cup with 845 points. With the victory, he’s up to 1,066 points. Petrangelo is the only player with more than 1,000 points. In fact, he’s the only player to have earned more than 500 points to date in the 2022 PGT season.

Finishing fifth place in Event #5 allowed Imsirovic to move into second on the 2022 PGT leaderboard. He now has 432 points.
