Scott Seiver Revealed as Phil Hellmuth's High Stakes Duel Challenger

Scott Seiver has been announced as Phil Hellmuth’s new opponent for High Stakes Duel III Round 4, set to premiere on PokerGO on Tuesday, May 17, at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT). The two will be playing for $400,000 each with $800,000 at stake.

Seiver’s addition to the High Stakes Duel ring comes after Tom Dwan withdrew from the match.

“This program has been a must-watch event each episode so far and I wanted an opportunity to be a part of the action and hopefully add my own mark on it,” Seiver told PokerGO about the opportunity to face Hellmuth.

The full match will be broadcast exclusively on PokerGO.com on Tuesday, May 17, at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT). Hellmuth has had quite the record on High Stakes Duel. He went a perfect 3-0 against both Antonio Esfandiari and Daniel Negreanu. He then made it seven consecutive victories when he topped Nick Wright in High Stakes Duel III Round 1. Wright did not rematch Hellmuth, and that’s when Dwan entered the ring. Dwan defeated Hellmuth in High Stakes Duel III Round 2, but then Hellmuth came back with a victory of his own in High Stakes Duel III Round 3. That brought us to the highlight anticipated High Stakes Duel III Round 4 which will be the largest High Stakes Duel match to date. “It is impossible to not respect Phil Hellmuth’s poker game because the results speak for themselves, however, where his talent lies is probably most misunderstood by the general public as opposed to those with a more nuanced view,” Seiver said of Hellmuth. “His game is speech play, but he is one of the best in the world at it.”

A strong player in his own right, Seiver has more than $24,000,000 in career live tournament earnings and a heads-up record of 13-8, according to HendonMob.com. Seiver has three WSOP gold bracelets and one World Poker Tour title to his credit.

Seiver and Hellmuth have played a lot together over the years, and Seiver is known to engage in plenty of competitive banter with the “Poker Brat.” Seiver cited the final table of the 2011 WSOP $50,000 Poker Players Championship as his favorite memory of playing with Hellmuth. In that tournament, Hellmuth finished second to Brian Rast for $1,063,034. Seiver placed seventh for $243,978.

“There will be trash talk before and during 100%,” Seiver said.

Hellmuth is the latest player to win a High Stakes Duel round. Per the rules of PokerGO’s High Stakes Duel, the stakes double with each round with the ultimate potential of an eighth round being played for $12,800,000 in prize money. A player can walk away victorious if they win three consecutive matches before Round 4 or two consecutive matches starting with Round 4. That means that no matter who wins between Hellmuth and Seiver in High Stakes Duel III Round 4, there will be a High Stakes Duel III Round 5 when each competitor puts up $800,000 and the two play for $1,600,000. The loser of this next match has first right to a rematch, but if they decline, a new player will be invited to step into the ring at those stakes. Both Hellmuth and Seiver would need to win two consecutive matches starting with High Stakes Duel III Round 4 in order to be eligible to walk away.

“I’m not really thinking about losing, but I expect to rematch if it happens,” Seiver said. “And you would have to ask him if he would rematch, not me.”
