The World Series of Poker Main Event is always chock-full of characters but this year, even deep on Day 6, there is an actual character battling for a shot at poker immortality. That character is Superman, or as he is known in his civilian life, Jonathan Dwek. The Canadian has been in a head-to-toe Superman costume from the start of play and The Man of Steel currently finds himself with a top-five stack.
Despite not being a professional poker player by trade, Dwek has a handful of sizable scores over the last decade. Dwek turned an online satellite into a $60,000 result at the EPT 4 Grande Final Main Event in 2008 and since then, he has played the Main Event every year.
“I’ve played the Main Event eight times so far, I’ve bricked all of them.” Dwek said with a laugh, before adding, “This is my first cash, so I’m pretty pleased with things so far.”
Dwek currently has $145,733 locked up with 48 players remaining in the Main Event but given his current chip stack, Superman and his fans at home have bigger plans.
“The support has been great, I’ve had a lot of people contacting me, wishing me well.” Dwek said, before explaining how his co-workers have been following his progress. “A lot of people from work have been following my Instagram story, I’m hoping to keep it going. I see the big money and hope I can win it.”
As the CFO of a tech-startup, Dwek spends his working days dealing with big money but he doesn’t want to get too ahead of himself.
“There is still some ways to go, so I don’t want to start thinking too much,” Dwek said, before joking about his fans at the final table, “I was thinking, someone could be Batman, my mom would be Wonder Woman, we’ll see.”
There are close to 40 more eliminations before the Justice League can come together at the final table but if Jonathan Dwek can avoid any krypontian coolers from here on out, The Man of Steel could find himself with some WSOP gold. Watch Dwek and the rest of the WSOP Main Event live on PokerGO.
