There is always one headlining player on Day 6 of the World Series of Poker. Tom Marchese and a group of high stakes pros admirably competed in 2016. Daniel Negreanu stood tall in 2015. Dan Smith was near the top of the leaderboard in 2014. In 2013, Carlos Mortensen is that player. The 2016 Poker Hall of Fame inductee earned another badge of honor with his second deep Main Event run of the century.
Now available on PokerGO are four episodes from Day 6 in 2013 with Mortensen seated at the feature table. ‘The Matador’ built his legend off of his 2001 Main Event win and the three World Poker Tour titles that followed.
This Main Event is the chance for Mortensen to put a permanent stamp on his status as one of the best No Limit Hold’em tournament players of all-time. As it goes in poker, treachery stands in the way of history.
Mortensen is forced into numerous difficult situations. The peak of these decisions comes in a hand against Jorn Walthaus when Mortensen tanks for over 10 minutes with his tournament life on the line. It’s a hand that puts a microscope on Mortensen’s instincts. The gears turn with tens of thousands playing out in his brain with only one correct outcome possible.
There is more history at stake on the outer tables. Before Mark Newhouse went back-to-back at the November Nine, Steve Gee almost beat him to the punch. The 2012 Main Event ninth-place finishers plays to the beat of his own drum and his unusual brand of poker place opponents on edge. Gee won’t be eliminated without a fight and takes the punch to his opponents.
Speaking of eliminations, Jackie Glazier is the last woman standing in her attempt to be the first female to make the November Nine. Glazier’s bid comes up short and she bids farewell in emotional fashion with the camera on her at the feature table.
Other players to make a name for themselves on Day 6 include the nightclub promoter Jay Farber, who opens Day 6 with a bang by doubling up through Noah Schwartz. Farber’s run to the final table starts here and he never looks back.
