The 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event was the largest WSOP Main Event in history, with 10,112 entrants. Now just three players remain in the pursuit for the $10,000,000 first-place prize and title of 2024 World Champion.
Sweden's Niklas Astedt ended Day 1 of the final table as the chip leader with 223,000,000 in chips. He is trailed by American Jonathan Tamayo, with 197,000,000, and overnight chip leader Jordan Griff, with 187,000,000.
Once cards were in the air for the final table, it would be Andres Gonzalez finding an early double when he was all-in with pocket eights against the pocket threes of Jordan Griff. An eight on the flop, followed by a turned full house, ensured the double for Gonzalez. Niklas Astedt closed the gap on Griff until he won a huge pot from Brian Kim when he flopped a set, turned a full house, and saw Kim go runner-runner ace-high flush. Kim paid off bets on the turn and river and sunk down the leaderboard.
Frenchman Malo Latinois would be the first elimination of the day when he was all-in with ace-king suited against the pocket threes of Griff. The flop brought an ace, but the dagger three on the turn sent Latinois to the rail for a $1,000,000 payday. Jonathan Tamayo then doubled with ace-night against Griff's ace-seven. Joe Serock was then all-in from the small blind holding ace-jack and Astedt woke up up with pocket queens in the big blind. The board ran out clean, and Serock was eliminated in eighth place.
Gonzalez then managed to find another double, this time with pocket kings against the pocket queens of Kim. Kim would respond to a button raise with a three-bet out of the small blind with king-six suited. Astedt four-bet the big blind as the button folded. Kim shoved and Astedt called with pocket tens. Astedt flopped a set, and Kim turned a flush draw, but a brick on the river sent Kim to the rail in seventh place for $1,500,000 in prize money.
Tamayo found another double holding ace-nine when he was all-in prefop against Griff's ace-king. The nine on the river propelled Tamayo to third in chips as Griff sunk to his lowest chip count since the start of the final table. With Astedt dominating the leaderboard with a stack worth roughly 40% of the chips in play, he would then take a step back when his ace-jack doubled the ace-five of Boris Angelov as a five landed on the flop.
Gonzalez found another double with pocket jacks against the pocket threes of Astedt, but his run of luck would come to an end when he was eliminated in sixth place when his pocket jacks were outdrawn by the ace-queen of Astedt. Angelov was the next to fall when he shoved for roughly six big blinds with pocket sixes and Tamayo called with king-six. The king on the flop and turn ended Angelov's run, and the final table was down to four. Shortly after, Jason Sagle was all-in with pocket jacks against the ace-three of Astedt. Astedt flopped a three and went runner-runner straight to make a wheel to send Sagle to the rail in fourth place.
Astedt holds the chip lead entering the final day of the 2024 WSOP Main Event with 223,000,000, while Tamayo sits with 197,000,000. Overnight chip leader Griff finished with 187,000,000, as the final three will battle to a winner on Wednesday, July 17.

The final three players in the 2024 WSOP Main Event are now guaranteed $4,000,000 in prize money, but all eyes remain on the $10,000,000 first-place prize, WSOP Main Event bracelet, and title of 2024 World Champion. And if that's not enough, the 2024 World Champion will forever be known to have won the biggest WSOP Main Event in history and have their accomplishment immortalized on a banner among all the previous champions of the WSOP Main Event.
