Masters Sunday: High Roller of the Year Points at a Premium

For players that are in contention, “Masters Sunday” is usually the most important Sunday of their lives. 18 holes separate golfers from the Green Jacket and four Sundays separate the world’s best poker players from the start of their 2018 Poker Masters journey. Before the race to the Poker Masters Purple Jacket® begins, Poker Central will preview the highest stakes week of the year with “Masters Sunday” updates covering everything and anything Poker Masters.

Poker Masters is a chance for the game’s best to compete over giant prize pools along with High Roller of the Year point status. The 2017 scoring system revolved around monetary winnings only. This year, the scoring system to award the coveted Poker Masters Purple Jacket® is the same one used in determining who becomes the first High Roller of the Year.

The stakes are even higher during Poker Masters. All events come with a specific point multiplier that is used for each respective High Roller Triple Crown™ series.

Points are awarded as followed for Poker Masters with 3.0 multipliers in place.

• 1st place – 300 points
• 2nd place – 210 points
• 3rd place – 150 points
• 4th place – 120 points
• 5th place – 90 points
• All other payouts – 60 points

The multiplier kicks up to 3.5 points in the $100,000 buy-in Poker Masters Main Event. The six preliminary events should do a quality job of determining the favorite heading into the finale.

Cary Katz (945 points) and Sam Soverel (930 points) are neck-and-neck for the points lead leading into opening day on September 7. The two players have gone separate, but independently efficient routes to open up their lead over the field.

Katz owns one win at ARIA this campaign coming on July 8 where he earned $222,000. Built around the one win is a whopping 11 cashes totaling $1.21 million in High Roller winnings.

Soverel’s meat comes out of five wins, all earned between June 4 and July 17. In total, Soverel owns nine cashes this High Roller season worth $1.413 million.

A few hundred points behind but not out of the race by a longshot is Adrian Mateos. The Spanish incinerator collected two wins and six cashes this summer to put himself up to 650 points total.

Rounding out the top-five are Ben Tollerene (455 points) and 2018 Super High Roller Bowl winner Justin Bonomo (405 points).
