Qing Liu bagged the top stack out of six remaining players in the Stairway to Millions Event #3: $900 No-Limit Hold'em at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas. Second in chips is Roland Israelashvili, who has cashed in all three tournaments of the series so far.
Wu Zhou finished runner-up in Event #1, Arsh Grover finished third in Event #2, and both players will return to the final day of Event #3 with another opportunity for a title. Mikael Andersen and Darren Rabinowitz bagged shorter stacks but will have room for a run, as the players return to The Venetian on Sunday, September 11 at noon to play to a winner.
The field of 82 entrants created a prize pool of $65,600, breaking through the $50,000 guarantee, and the top 13 finishers earned a piece of it. All players who made it into the money received prize money in addition to a $1,640 seat into either Event #5 or #6. The top three finishers will skip a step and receive a $2,740 seat into Event #7, and the eventual winner will claim $12,510 along with the seat.
Liu scored a double knockout by eliminating Elvis Toomas and another opponent near the money bubble, and that pot moved Liu over the million chip mark on his way to the eventual chip lead. Soon after, Jim Agate was eliminated on the Event #3 bubble after running into Zhou's big slick.
The remaining players were in the money, and Skip Wilson (13th), Michael Evans (12th), Ryan Laplante (11th), and Kainalu McCue-Unciano (10th) were those who cashed but fell short of the unofficial final table.
Once the players converged to a single table, Andras Stumpf was ousted in ninth when he ran his ace-queen into Liu's cowboys and found no help as Liu improved to a full house. Jesse Lonis then made his exit in eighth when he ran his short stack into Israelashvili's cowboys.
Brian Frenzel then got his chips in as a favorite against Grover, but the board runout was unfavorable and he was eliminated in seventh place. Frenzel finished in eighth place in Event #2 and again just missed out on bagging for the final day, but he secured another cash and will return to attempt to further ascend the steps.
