Nick Petrangelo bagged nearly three times the starting stack and leads 12 remaining players in Super High Roller Bowl VIII at the PokerGO Studio from ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The field of 20 entrants created a prize pool of $6,000,000 and the top four finishers will earn a piece of it. Each player to make it into the money will earn at least $600,000, while the eventual winner will take home $2,760,000 in addition to 550 PGT Points and the Super High Roller Bowl VIII ring.
Sitting just behind Petrangelo in the chip counts is Andrew Lichtenberger. Petrangelo finished runner-up in last year's Super High Roller Bowl while Lichtenberger finished third, and both will be returning to the penultimate day in good position to attempt to improve upon those finishes. Others on the top half of the leaderboard include Isaac Haxton, Jason Koon, Cary Katz, and Chris Brewer.
Reigning Super High Roller Bowl VII champion Daniel Negreanu finished the day with a nice stack of 420,000 and will return near the middle of the pack, while Paul Jager, recent Purple Jacket winner Stephen Chidwick, Justin Bonomo, Kristen Foxen, and Bryn Kenney will also be returning to the second day of play.
Those who fell during the first day include Jonathan Jaffe, Orpen Kisacikoglu, Adrian Mateos, Alex Foxen, Bill Klein, Dan Smith, and Seth Davies.
Petrangelo had a slow start but chipped up throughout the latter half of the day on his way to the chip lead. He scored a double knockout near the end of the night when he flopped a flush to eliminate both Klein and Smith to rise to the top of the counts, and he will have just a bit under 150 big blinds when play resumes on Day 2.
