On Thursday, July 6, during Day 1d of the 2023 World Series of Poker Main Event, Ty Stewart, WSOP Senior Vice President and Executive Director, announced that the 2023 WSOP Main Event became the largest WSOP Main Event ever with more than 8,773 entries in the field. The 2023 WSOP Main Event is now the richest poker tournament in history, surpassing the 17-year-old record from the 2006 WSOP Main Event.
“This is a colossal day not only in the history of the WSOP but for poker itself,” said WSOP Senior Vice President and Executive Director Ty Stewart in a press release. “It’s particularly special to make history in our first year at the new Horseshoe Las Vegas. I think today is a huge testament to the passion of the entire poker community who rallies around this event every year. We’re hoping this record is short-lived and we’ll be ready for another monster turnout next summer.”
Not only did the attendance past the 8,773 entries from 2006, but the field size soared past 9,000 entries. Registration will remain open for the remainder of the final starting flight, Day 1d, on Thursday, July 6, and two levels on both Day 2s. Day 2abc takes place on Friday, July 7, and Day 2d takes place on Saturday, July 8. With fewer than 1,000 entries needed to eclipse an outstanding 10,000 entries, it appears that a five-figure field size is very much in the making.
If the 2023 WSOP Main Event gets at least 10,015 entries, it will join the ranks of the top 15 largest poker tournaments in history.
Among the field of more than 9,000 entries are some of poker's biggest names and brightest stars, including Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Joe Hachem, Chris Moneymaker, Maria Ho, and the player who won the previous record-setting WSOP Main Event, Jamie Gold.
With a record-setting field confirmed, the WSOP's “Main Event Seat for Life” promotion is now in effect, and one player will be drawn at random from this year's field and awarded a complimentary entry to the WSOP Main Event for the next 30 years.
