Poker legend Phil Hellmuth has just fallen short of a record-extending 16th World Series of Poker gold bracelet at King’s Casino in Rozvadov. Phil Hellmuth lost heads up against Besim Hot in the €25,500 Mixed Game Championship event.
The day started with two Poker Hall of Fame members in contention for the bracelet as Daniel Negreanu found himself in contention as well. Negreanu, however, was equally interested in gathering World Series of Poker Player of the Year points as his sixth-place finish in this event put him in the driver’s seat on that leaderboard.
World Series of Poker Main Event finalist Alex Livingston was the first to get eliminated in seventh place as he ran into the ten-high straight of Besim Hot. Hot, who grabbed the chip lead right off the bat, was unstoppable at this final table as he continued to knock players out. Daniel Negreanu couldn’t get anything going and after a string of massive swings he busted in sixth place. Negreanu was eliminated by Hellmuth in a round of Razz where he double paired against The Brat’s eight-low.
Julien Martini, PSPC runner-up and WSOP bracelet winner, finished in fifth place when he couldn’t beat Dzmitry Urbanovich’s two pair in Stud Eight-or-Better. Benny Glaser was next to go in fourth place as he busted in No Limit Hold’em versus Urbanovich holding jack-eight against nines on a queen-ten-five flop. The turn and river bricked and Glaser collected €111,689 for his efforts.
Despite knocking out two players, Urbanovic was the short stack three-handed and he busted next to get Hellmuth into heads-up play. Urbanovich collected €162,463 after busting to Hellmuth in Razz for his biggest result since February of 2016.
The heads up battle started with Hot in the lead and he never looked back. Hellmuth couldn’t get anything going and despite making a few small comebacks he busted rather quickly. Hot collected his first career bracelet and Hellmuth will have to wait for at least one more event before he can extend his record of 15 career WSOP gold bracelets.
Earlier this summer, we asked ourselves whether Phil Hellmuth would win his 16th WSOP gold bracelet in Las Vegas and he’s now once again just fallen short of yet another historic win.
